This photo captures a truly unforgettable moment. I took it from above the stage in the International Area of Expo 2012 Yeosu, as Korean singer Psy performed his global hit Gangnam Style.
I interned with the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) for three months, managing and creating on-site social media projects to highlight the visitor experience. It was an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the energy and culture of an Expo, and this particular day stands out as one of the most memorable.
It started as an ordinary day. After lunch, my team and I returned to the Expo site, heading toward the BIE’s office in International Building A. However, as we approached, we encountered an unexpected obstacle: an immense crowd had gathered, occupying every available space around the office.
After some effort, I managed to navigate the packed area and reach the office to retrieve my camera. Then began the challenging task of weaving through the dense crowd to find the perfect vantage point. It took nearly an hour, but persistence paid off.
As I approached the bridge overlooking the stage, I spotted an opening near the edge. With my camera in hand, I positioned myself just as Gangnam Style began.
The timing couldn’t have been better. Thousands of visitors, caught up in the music and excitement, faced my direction, creating a moment of collective joy and energy. It was the perfect shot.
During Expo 2012 Yeosu, I took more than 30,000 photos. This one stands out as one of my top three favorites: a snapshot highlighting why Expos must be experienced in person.
