Located in Tsukuba Science City, a planned town outside Tokyo, Expo '85 was Japan's third world's fair after Expo '70 in Osaka and Expo '75 in Okinawa. Japan would later host Expo 2005 outside Nagoya.

Mascots
The official mascot of Expo '85 was Cosmo Hoshimaru.
Maki Takagaki, a junior high school student designed the mascot which was chosen as part of a nationwide competition by school children.
